The Quartet for Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano was composed in the
spring of 1986 and premiered Wed, Nov 19, 1986 at the University of
Akron's
Guzzetta Hall with Larry Shipiro, violin; Alan Bodman, viola; Greg
Fiocca,
Cello and Donna Geller, piano. The 13 minute work consists of an
Introduction and two contiguous movements titled Salterello and
Chaccone.
It is an eclectic mixture of complex new music idioms and a simple
neo-romantic
and tonal harmonic language. The harmonic progression that
forms the basis of the slow moving Chaccone is first heard in the
harmonically
complex introduction and again in the middle of the rapidly moving
Salterello.
The excerpt on the works page is from a live recording of the premiere
performance; it features the latter part of the Salterello and the
opening
of the Chaccone. The mp3 excerpt below is from the work's
premiere.
